CATHEDRAL AFTER DARK (NEW ALBUM)

His latest project, Cathedral After Dark, is a live recording captured during a late-night performance at Christ Church Cathedral in Victoria. Conceived as an immersive journey rather than a standard concert, the album utilizes the cathedral’s vast, resonant acoustics as a primary element of the composition. The late-night setting allowed for a unique dialogue between the musicians and the environment, where the natural spatial depth of the architecture becomes an integral part of the recorded sound.

To bring this expansive vision to life, Johnston-Stewart collaborated with a distinguished ensemble of instrumentalists:
- Jillian Forster Fair (Piano): Anchors the performance with a sensitive touch, bridging the intimate and the expansive while shaping the harmonic narrative.
- The Emily Carr String Quartet: Brings technical brilliance and emotive depth, supporting the work’s evolving musical architecture.
- Bruce Meikle (Double Bass): Provides a profound layer of gravity, grounding the ensemble with a rich, cinematic texture.
The performance moves fluidly through shifting atmospheres, from delicate, whispered string passages to grand, room-filling crescendos that fully engage the listener’s senses.
Cathedral After Dark is released through Leaf Music, an independent classical label based in Halifax and Nashville. Distributed globally via Naxos of America, this partnership brings Johnston-Stewart’s sophisticated, room-filling compositions to an international audience, marking a significant milestone in his artistic output.
